A Sunshine Coast MP who played a key role in securing the 2032 Olympic Games has been named a “special envoy” to the prime minister.

PM Scott Morrison said Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien would be the middle man between the Commonwealth, the Queensland Government, businesses and the community.

“This role will see Mr O’Brien engaging with businesses and the community to ensure the Commonwealth retains an ongoing dialogue with, and understanding of, the key interests of the Queensland community,” announced Mr Morrison.

“He will report directly to me and also work closely with the Minister for Sport, Richard Colbeck, and the Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, Paul Fletcher, to help deliver on the Commonwealth’s partnership with the Queensland Government and other Games partners to make Brisbane 2032 a world-class Games with a lasting legacy.”

Mr Morrison said Mr O’Brien had played an integral role in securing the rights for Southeast Queensland hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and was “my personal representative for Brisbane’s candidature”.

“Hosting the Games is a remarkable opportunity for both Queensland and Australia to lock in economic and social benefits for years to come,” said Mr Morrison.

“I congratulate Mr O’Brien and look forward to continuing to work with him.”

Mr O’Brien is also driving the formation of a special taskforce to capitalise on “the single greatest transformative opportunity in the history of the Sunshine Coast’’.

He recently hosted a forum at the Maroochydore Surf Club — by zoom from Canberra — to gauge interest in the establishment of a united body to “maximise the benefits’’ of the mega event.
